The Point(less): UMass Boston's Unions Are The New Free Speech Warriors
And by free speech we mean only the kind of speech they agree with
Dear faculty Comrades,
Welcome to the new school year! We resume our weekly blasts of The Point(less): union woke propaganda totally relevant news and tidbits.
While our brave students participated in a UMass system wide summer camp to globalize the Intifada after Israel’s completely unprovoked war in Gaza, our evil administrators spent the summer trying to find new ways to limit our free speech.
We at the union really really care about free speech! It’s always been the core of our very being. If you ask where we were when faculty members were harassed or lost their jobs by saying something that wasn’t the N word but sounded a bit like it, or when professors got suspended for saying there were only two sexes, or when a professor was fired for criticizing the BLM movement, then we have two things to say to you:
You are a racist, sexist, far right bigot. Everyone who disagrees with us is, by definition.
You have to understand that freedom of speech is not freedom from consequences (as long as it’s not OUR approved kind of speech and/or we’re not the ones suffering the consequences).
To the point(less) - our university Leaders have had the Chutzpah to change our protest policy. They sent us a system-wide email saying that the students have to limit their protests to designated areas (!!!), notify the university in advance (!!!), not allow outsiders (!!!) and even limit the noise level (!!!). Gone are the good days when our students could just freely disrupt other students learning, block their paths, steal pizzas, take employees hostage and smash windows!!! In case you’re wondering, smashing windows is totally peaceful protest and free speech. I mean, nobody dies when you smash property, right? Then it’s peaceful. End of discussion. Taking people hostage is also a legitimate and peaceful way of resistance, by the way.
Speaking of which, the new demonstration advance notification form is a whole new kind of yikes. They ask the students to… wait a second… drum roll… PAY for any damage they cause! Oh, the audacity! Someone bring me the smelling salts before I pass out! Yeah, I know that our stunningly meh new quad cost a lot of money, with the Chancellor’s golden statue and all, but defacing and destroying it will only make it look better so it’s totally OK.
Now, you’re not gonna believe this: In the second paragraph of that system wide email, we are told that with new spaces come new policies, including ones regulating free speech. Wait. What?
Na, just kidding. The email never said it. Instead, it said the following:
But I’m telling you this anyway because lying is part of free speech, amiright? It’s definitely part and parcel of the woke movement. Besides, it’s not like you’re going to go back and fact-check, and even if you do - what are you going to do about it? You’ll still pay us tons of money every year in union fees to do… whatever it is that we do. Joke’s on you.
Gotta go now! Need to help block an on-campus gathering of Zionist faculty and students. Why do they think they have the right?!
Until next time,
Your union Comrades.
What perfect insight!!!!
This year Cornell University seems to have also become very protective of its spaces. The Heterodox Academy Campus Community and a host of cosponsors are bringing in Daryl Davis to speak on October second. The first room I requested would not be available any time in the Fall semester. The second room would cost us approximately $2000. Yesterday, we were denied the third room we requested to use between 4:30 and 7:30 PM: "This request falls between two large academic courses. Based on the size of the estimated audience and the set-up and breakdown needs of such an event, we have denied the request, deeming it disruptive to our student's academic pursuits, which is always our top priority in making these difficult decisions."
